Tornedale Infant Academy

Tornedale Infant Academy

Admissions

Tornedale Infant Academy is a member of Leger Education Trust. The Academy will follow the admission arrangements of the City of Doncaster Council, as agreed in the admissions annex of Leger Education Trust's funding agreement.

All applications to attend Tornedale must be made to the City of Doncaster Council as only the local authority is able to allocate a place in this Academy.

In Doncaster, each school serves a local community, usually referred to as the ‘catchment area’. These arrangements reflect the philosophy that ‘efficient education’ is particularly fostered by closely associating a secondary school and a group of linked primary schools, in a pyramid. In this way, each school becomes part of the provision for a community and the education of the community’s children benefits greatly from the association of its schools.

Nursery Admissions

Parents should initially apply to the Local Authority for their child to be admitted in the September following their third birthday (see Link DMBC Nursery Admissions).  Pupils will be entitled to 15 hours free provision each week for 38 weeks.

If places are available, children may be admitted as an early starter:

  • children born in the Autumn Term may be able to start in the Spring Term
  • children born in the Spring Term  may be able to start in the Summer Term

In the event of oversubscription, places are awarded according to the following criteria:

  • Looked After Children or Previously Looked After Children
  • Children resident in the school catchment area
  • If there are more children than places available, places will be determined by reference to birth, eldest first.

If a place is not available, the child's name will be placed on a waiting list until a place becomes available.

Tornedale's nursery will support families through home visits, a nursery meeting and a “stay and play “ session - all of which offer the opportunity for families to share information, for nursery staff to get to know children and parents/carers, to prepare for the new nursery children and to put necessary measures in place to support both children and their families.

Reception Admissions

Parents should initially apply to the Local Authority for their child to be admitted in the September following their fourth birthday (see Link DMBC Primary Admissions).  Tornedale's admission number for Reception is 60 pupils.

Preferences for Tornedale will be sorted based upon the following criteria:

  • Looked After Children or Previously Looked After Children
  • Children resident in the school catchment area
  • Siblings or other members of the same family unit currently attending Tornedale.
  • Proximity to the school

Transition to Tornedale's Reception is extensive.  Those children currently attending our nursery will regularly visit the Reception classes in the summer term attending assemblies and experiencing playtime.  There will be a meeting in June for parents of all children starting our Reception in the September.  For children joining from another school nursery or private setting, we will visit the setting and notify parents of a transition morning for children to become familiar with the school and our staff with a chance to book for a school meal.

Feedback from one of our current parents: “Friendly staff. My child looks forward to school and feels safe.”
