School Meals & Menus

From September 2014 all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes have been offered a “free” healthy school meal each lunchtime. Doncaster Schools Catering prepare the meals in our own kitchen. The menu for each week will be displayed in the notice cabinet on the top playground for your information. It is important that the school office be informed of any child with any allergy, intolerance or any medical diet so that the kitchen staff can provide the correct food for every child. This information must be supplied by a medical professional.

Free School Meals

Your child maybe eligible for free school meals if you are receiving one of the following benefits or support:

  • Universal Credit - Your annual net earned income must be no more that £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to 3 of your most recent assessment periods.
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit but not Working Tax Credit and your annual income is below £16,190 (as worked out by HM Revenue & Customs)

  • support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • parents receiving Working Tax Credit for four weeks after their employment finishes are entitled to free school meals during that period.  This also applies to parents who start working less than 16 hours per week

You are NOT entitled to free school meals if:

  • You receive Working Tax Credit except where the 'four week run-on' applies as described above

An application must be made to the City of Doncaster Council before free school meals can be provided. Normally, the parent or guardian of the child makes the request. Please note: you will have to pay for any school meals your child receives before your application has been processed.   The City of Doncaster Council will then notify the Academy if your child is eligible.

You can apply for free school meals up to a maximum of two months before your child starts school.

Food Allergies & Special Diets

It is very important that you let the Class Teacher or Headteacher know if your child has any allergies or special diets for either health or religious reasons. We do require medical evidence of any allergies.

Packed Lunches

Good nutrition in childhood can help to prevent a variety of health problems, both in the short term and later in life. There is increasing concern and scientific evidence that many children are consuming too much fat, sugar and salt and too little fibre, fruit and vegetables. Packed lunches can contribute to almost a third of a child’s weekly food intake and therefore need to be balanced and nutritious. Please find attached a simple guide to support families in providing a balanced packed lunch for their child.

Please note when providing packed lunches, Tornedale has a nut-free school kitchen and is aiming to ensure that we provide a nut-free environment throughout school. We ask for your co-operation in ensuring that nuts and nut based items (such as nutella spread) are not included in your child's lunch.
