Children starting Year 1 are gradually introduced to a more structured approach to learning, although there are still many similarities with the Early Years curriculum.

Learning through exploration, challenge and discovery continues to be valued. Children still have opportunities to learn through practical approaches to learning. Maths and English are taught daily, and learning often takes a cross-curricular approach through topics. A topic is a theme that links together different curriculum areas.

The subject areas in Key Stage One are:

We also have a responsibility to teach Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), as well as British Values, including mutual respect, tolerance of different beliefs and faiths, democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty.

Some aspects of the curriculum do not fit within a topic and are therefore taught as discrete subjects. The National Curriculum provides guidance on the knowledge and skills children should be taught in each subject at every stage of their education. Teachers in Years 1 and 2 use this framework to plan the curriculum each half term. More detailed weekly plans are then produced, taking account of the individual needs of the children in their class.
